The Watsons Go to Birmingham—September 2013

September 24, 2013 in recap

Ahh, September. The end of summer, the beginning of fall. Speaking of which, do you know the origin of the term “fall” as a season? It’s really more of a term in the US (and Canada), but it’s actually prettttty old school. Turns out we English speakers just thought that the Germanic word was more fun to say than autumn, with all the falling leaves and stuff… anyway, that was way back in the 17th century. So then we start coming over here by the boat load, bringing our cool words like “fall” with us, and it stuck. Meanwhile, England ignores our cool Germanic word and sticks with “autumn.” This is how wars are started, people.

ANYWAY. I digress. Mostly because I’m not sure what I’m going to write in this post. I actually considered asking for help writing this one… I just looked at my to-do list and seriously thought to myself, “Do I have time to wash my hair today?” And the answer is no, I don’t. But I HAVE to write this post before Matt and I move… it’s one of my big goals to finish it before things get crazy. So I thought I’d maybe send an email pleading for “what did we do?” details after being such a slacker, because I wasn’t sure I could write another how-humorous-is-it-that-I-suck recap post, because I’m starting to get more comfortable using the pregnancy card to get out of things, and because I shouldn’t have put this post off so long.

But from whom do I ask for help, hmm? My friend Des, who has messaged me not once but twice in the past two days, confirming baby shower details with me that I should have told her about already? Or how about my friend Jen, who’s so busy dealing with work that I’m not sure how she gets normal things done, like laundry (from what she told me last week, she just doesn’t).

So alas, my hair will go unwashed, my friends will go unbothered, and I’m just going to write this damn thing and stop waxing on about other stuff. Wax off.

The Watsons Go to Birmingham. My friends had kind compliments for this book: good family story, great characters, funny parts. Overall, it wasn’t a can’t-put-it-down fan favorite, but they empathized with my early love of this childhood chapter classic.

I seriously wrote a paragraph about how I made Stouffer’s lasagna and just had to erase it because I remember now that I actually made an asian rice dish with teriyaki meatballs and stir-fry veggies. Des brought yummy pull-apart bread and Jen brought a cobbler that was based on her Mom’s famed dessert (although, I think she was dropping hints about needing more baking pans for Christmas, right Des?).

The challenge was “Childhood Friends Day” and… we talked about that.

Des exercised her right not to post music, I tried to find all bands from the 60s (Cash, The Temptations, Otis Redding, Etta James) and included the book’s “Yakety Yak” song, and Jen wrote hers out in the music selection forum so now I’m going to paste that here to make it look like I wrote more.
1. Good Day Sunshine | Beatles
2. Ya Got Trouble | The Music Man Soundtrack
3. A White Shade of Pale | Procol Harum
4. Friends | Led Zeppelin
5. Dream a Little Dream of Me | Mama Cass

Current Events:
As always, we had an enjoyable, lively discussion that ended with a round of “let’s watch movie trailers.” Our most vibrant topics were the really gross parenting post that I won’t share here because it’s too disgusting, the what-character-are-you HP typology chart, and Pinterest over-users.

Wa-bam. See you next time it’s my turn.
